Landscape Design & Installation in Colorado Springs, Falcon, Monument & Black Forest
Does artificial turf really look real now?
Some does. Some absolutely does not.
There is a massive difference between lower-end turf products and higher quality systems. Blade shape, color variation, density, backing, and even how the turf is installed all affect the final look.
Most homeowners are trying to avoid the shiny “mini golf course from 2004” look. Modern turf products have come a long way, especially when paired with good landscape design, natural transitions, planting, edging, and decorative rock.
A good turf install should blend into the landscape — not scream at you from across the street.
Is artificial turf a good option for dog owners?
Artificial turf has become a very popular option for homeowners with dogs, especially in Colorado where natural grass can struggle with heavy traffic, dry conditions, mud, and urine spots.
Many families like turf simply because it creates a cleaner and more usable outdoor space. Less mud, fewer worn-out grass areas, and fewer paws sprinting into the house after a spring thunderstorm looking like they just completed military training.
That being said, not every turf system is designed the same. Proper drainage, product selection, and installation all play a major role in how well a turf system performs for pets long-term.
Will weeds grow through artificial turf?
A properly installed turf system with quality prep and weed barrier underneath can dramatically reduce weed growth compared to traditional lawns or unmanaged rock beds.
Because turf is still an outdoor product, occasional weeds can still appear over time, usually from airborne seeds settling on top of the surface. Most homeowners find weed management significantly lower and easier overall compared to traditional lawn areas.
Does turf require maintenance?
Artificial turf is definitely lower maintenance, but not completely maintenance-free. If someone promises “zero maintenance forever,” they are probably also trying to sell beachfront property in Kansas.
Most turf systems benefit from occasional rinsing, debris cleanup, brushing high-traffic areas, and basic upkeep. The good news is most homeowners are trading weekly mowing, watering, fertilizing, edging, dead patches, and mud management for fairly minimal maintenance overall.
Does artificial turf get hot?
This is probably the question we hear most during the summer months — and honestly, it is a fair one in Colorado.
Artificial turf can definitely warm up during direct sun exposure, especially at our elevation. That being said, there is a pretty big difference between “warm” and “completely unusable.” In many cases, decorative rock, concrete, and dark patios actually become hotter than the turf itself. We see plenty of fully xeriscaped yards that look beautiful from the street but feel like standing inside a cast iron skillet by July.
The type of turf, surrounding materials, shade, irrigation nearby, and overall landscape design all play a role. In our experience, balanced outdoor spaces almost always perform better than extreme all-rock landscapes.
Is artificial turf a good option for kids & families?
For many families, artificial turf is less about perfection and more about usability. Homeowners often choose turf because they want a yard that stays cleaner, more consistent, and easier to use throughout the year.
Many people appreciate having fewer muddy spots, less patchy grass, and outdoor spaces that actually get used regularly instead of avoided.
As with many modern building and landscape materials, every homeowner should research products, materials, and manufacturer information to determine what feels right for their family and comfort level.
How long does artificial turf last?
A quality turf installation should last for many years when properly installed and cared for. Product quality matters, but honestly, the installation underneath it matters just as much.
Poor prep work is usually where long-term problems start. Low spots, drainage issues, seam separation, and uneven surfaces often come from cutting corners underneath the turf — not necessarily the turf product itself.
This is one reason we focus heavily on base preparation and drainage during installation.
Does artificial turf drain well?
A properly installed turf system should drain extremely well. In many cases, drainage performance is actually better than struggling compacted clay lawns that turn into mud pits every spring.
The key is the prep underneath the surface. Grading, compacted base materials, and drainage planning all matter far more than most people realize.
Is artificial turf slippery in winter?
Not usually. Colorado winters tend to bring a mix of snow, sun, melt, refreeze, and chaos — and turf
generally handles that pretty well.
Snow can still accumulate just like any outdoor surface, but turf itself typically maintains decent traction and usability throughout the winter months.
Why are some turf projects so much more expensive than others?
A turf project is usually much more than simply rolling out synthetic grass.
Excavation, grading, drainage, retaining walls, edging, access, removals, product quality, and overall design all affect pricing.
Two yards that look similar on paper can require completely different amounts of labor and preparation underneath the surface.
In our experience, the long-term performance of a turf project usually comes down to the work people never see once the project is finished.
Is artificial turf worth it?
For many homeowners, yes — but usually not for the reasons people first think.
Most families are not installing turf because they are trying to avoid touching a lawn mower for the rest of their life. They are usually trying to create a cleaner, more usable, more functional outdoor space that stays visually consistent throughout the year.
In Colorado especially, artificial turf often works best as part of a balanced landscape plan with planting, rock, walls, patios, and outdoor living spaces rather than trying to replace every square foot of the yard with turf.
